Email Scam about the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System

As the IRS initiated electronic filing, computer hackers developed the next big scam. The IRS has issued a warning for all business owners and plan sponsors to be aware of a recent email scam. The email states your tax payments made by the email recipient through the EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) has been rejected. The email will direct you to a fake website which, will infect your computer and possible your company’s network. The IRS and the Financial Management Service does NOT communicate payment information through email. Therefore, if you receive a suspicious email refrain from opening and check your payment history at EFTPS. You can go to their website at https://www.eftps.gov/ or call EFTPS Voice Response System at 1-800-555-3453. You need to have been previously enrolled and know your Plan’s Trust Tax ID Number and your PIN number. If you recently were pre-enrolled in EFTPS and cannot find your PIN, call 1-888-434-7338.
